McNeil Consumer Healthcare has recalled a large number of children's and infant's medications due to the possibility that they do not meet quality standards. Products involved in the recall include many forms of Tylenol, Motrin, Zyrtec and Benadryl.
McNeil and the FDA have received no reports of adverse events due to children taking these medications, but have concerns that the concentration of active ingredients may not be appropriate, that some may contain ingredients that have not met quality standards and others may contain tiny particles.
If you have these products in your home, you should not give them to your child.
What should you use instead?
If your child is sick and needs one of these medications, you can give a generic store brand that contains the same active ingredient. For example, Tylenol contains acetaminophen, so any generic version of children's acetaminophen would be acceptable to use because generics are not involved in the recall. If you aren't sure which product to get, ask your pharmacist or health care provider.
